The Gift of LOVE….good Breath

Valentines Day is approaching, and there is one gift we can all give our loved ones….that is the gift of “Good Breath“!

One question that many people ask is “Why can’t we smell our own bad breath?” Well the answer is simple…We all have odor-detecting cells in the nose that eventually become accustomed to the constant flow of bad smells coming from our own mouth. So what can we do to make sure that we are odor free and ready for that Valentine Day Kiss

1: Don’t let your tongue become a dirty carpet: Your tongue microscopically is like a shaggy carpet. There are millions of filaments on your tongue that trap tiny food particles and bacteria. Solution: Keep your tongue clean. Brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth. You can use a tooth brush or a tongue scraper…it may not be fun but very worth it!

2:Drink more water: This helps keep the bacteria in you mouth to a minimum.        Solution: Drink, Drink, Drink….it leads to a healthier body as well

3: Practice good Oral Hygiene: Keeping plaque off of your teeth properly daily will keep the bacteria down in your mouth and it will aid in your oral help as well. Solution: Using proper Tooth Brush and Dental Floss technique two times a day.

4: Regular Hygiene Visits:It is important to see a dental hygienist twice a year for a routine cleaning and exam. By brushing and flossing each day, some plaque removal is possible. Plaque that is left behind on teeth can harden to form tartar. Tartar is the leading cause of tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath. By removing the tartar as well as any staining on the teeth, a hygienist can help you maintain a healthy mouth and beautiful smile. Solution: Come see us every 6 months :)

So give the gift of love this Valentines Day…GOOD BREATH!!!

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays to all!  We wanted to share a fun tradition and a delicious recipe with you that you may want to incorporate into your own family traditions this year.  The Hunt family, in West Haven, Utah, presents a beautiful pageant each year entitled “The Miracle of Christmas”, a live nativity.  The birth of the Savior tenderly brought to life through music, a live cast and animals!  The dates are Dec. 22nd, 23rd & 24th.  Performances begin at 6:30, 7:00 & 7:30 each night.  Each performance is 20 minutes.  They are located at 3161 S. 2850 W., West Haven, UT 84401.  It is held outdoors, so PLEASE DRESS WARM.  This is a fantastic production and once you attend you’ll never want to miss it.

I found a yummy new recipe a few years ago and wanted to share it:  Cranberry Cake with Hot Butter Sauce.

Cake:

2 cups all purpose flour                                 3 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt                                              1 cup granulated sugar

2 eggs, beaten                                               1 cup milk

3 tablespoons butter, melted                        2 cups fresh cranberries

Sauce:

1 cup butter                                                   2 cups sugar

1 cup cream, or half-and-half                      2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350F.  Grease a 9×13 inch glass pan.  Sift together flour, baking powder and salt in a small bowl, set aside.  Combine butter and sugar in a large bowl and beat with a mixer until well blended.  Add eggs, then add milk alternately with dry ingredients, starting and ending with dry ingredients.  Mix well.  Stir in cranberries and transfer to pan.  Bake for 30 minutes or until a wooden toothpick comes out clean.  For the sauce, combine all ingredients in saucepan over medium-low heat and cook for 10 minutes or until sugar is dissolved, stirring frequently.  Pour hot sauce over cake.  Serves 12

“My tooth is loose!”

“My tooth is loose!”

Those words represent a big milestone in your child’s life. Baby teeth have to fall out to make way for permanent teeth to grow — a process that lasts six or more years from start to finish. A child’s 20 baby teeth, which typically come in by age 3, usually fall out in the order in which they came in. A baby tooth typically doesn’t loosen until the permanent tooth below pushes it up to take its place. It’s possible for kids to lose a baby tooth too early, before the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, because of an accident or dental disease. If your child begins to lose teeth before 4, you should consult a dentist to make sure there’s no underlying disease. It’s also possible for a child to reach age 7 or 8 before losing any baby teeth. In such cases, there’s probably nothing wrong, but it’s a good idea to consult a dentist for X-rays to assess the situation. Sometimes a new tooth tries to come in before the old one is gone and there is no space available. This is another good reason to consult your dentist before the permanent tooth comes in.

Encourage your child to gently wiggle a loose tooth. But remind your child not to yank a tooth before it’s ready to fall out on its own because it makes the broken root more vulnerable to infection. When adult teeth come in, they are bigger and tend to be less white than baby teeth. Brushing is now more important than ever. You’ll probably need to supervise the process until your child is around 8. Most kids lose their last baby teeth around age 12 or 13, about the time the 12-year molars appear. And make sure your child sees the dentist twice a year!

Africa Adventure

From December 26th to January 5th, I traveled with a local group of dentists and construction workers and their families on a humanitarian visit to Mali, Africa.  It was my first trip to that part of the world and it quickly became an eye-opening and humbling experience.  Words hardly describe the myriad of emotions that filled each day.  This was an amazing group of dedicated volunteers working under challenging circumstances to help bring relief and education to a tolerant, trusting, and grateful people.  A few photos here will give you a glimpse with more photos at MobileMe Gallery – Mali Photos.  I welcome your comments and questions and would be happy to share more about the adventure.  Anything we do to lighten the burden of someone else enriches our life as well as theirs.
